We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his nobles. He said, "I am the messenger of the Lord of the Universe," 46 But when he came to them with Our Signs, behold they ridiculed them. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 They said, "Magician, pray to your Lord for us through your covenant with Him (If he saves us from the torment), we shall certainly seek guidance". 49 When We relieved them from the torment they suddenly turned back on their heels. 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Am I better or this contemptible man who is scarcely able to express himself? 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 Thus, he made dimwits out of his people and they followed him. They, certainly, were a sinful people. When they invoked Our anger, 54 But when they roused Our anger We inflicted retributive punishment and drowned them all, 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
