THUS, INDEED, have We sent Moses with Our messages unto Pharaoh and his great ones; and he said: "Behold, I am an apostle of the Sustainer of all the worlds!" 46 When he showed them Our miracles, they started to laugh at them. 47 even though each sign We showed them was greater than the previous one. We afflicted them with torment so that they might return [to the right path]. 48 And they said, “O you magician! Pray for us to your Lord, by the means of His covenant which is with you; we will certainly come to guidance.” 49 But whenever We removed the suffering from them, lo! they would break their word. 50 And Pharaoh caused a proclamation to be made among his people saying: O my people! Is not mine the sovereignty of Egypt and these rivers flowing under me? Can ye not then discern? 51 Am I not better than this contemptible man who can hardly make his meaning clear: 52 Why have bracelets of gold not been given to him and why have some angels not accompanied him?" 53 Thus he [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] befooled and misled his people, and they obeyed him. Verily, they were ever a people who were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). 54 So, when they angered Us, We punished them and drowned them every one. 55 and made them a thing of the past and an example for those who would come after them. 56
