He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
۞ He frowned and turned (his) back, 1 that the blind man came to him. 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 (He might) remember, and the Reminder might profit him. 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 to him didst thou give thy whole attention, 6 though you are not to be blamed if he would not purify himself -- 7 but as for one who comes to you, eagerly 8 And with fear (in his heart), 9 So you leave him, and are engrossed elsewhere! 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 exalted, purified, 14 by the hands of scribes 15 Honourable and Virtuous. 16 Man is (self-)destroyed: how ungrateful! 17 Of what substance God created him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Indeed, he has not fulfilled that which He has ordered him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 That We pour forth water in abundance, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 Thereby produced grain in it. 27 And grapes and green fodder 28 and olive trees and date-palms, 29 And gardens of dense shrubbery 30 And fruits and Abba (herbage, etc.), 31 for you and for your animals to enjoy. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 That Day shall a man flee from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father, 35 wife and sons, 36 Every man that day will have concern enough to make him heedless (of others). 37 Some faces on that Day shall be beaming with happiness, 38 Laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 o'erspread with darkness -- 41 these, these will be the ones who denied the truth and were immersed in iniquity! 42
