The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night when it enshrouds, 1 by the day when it appears radiant, 2 By (the mystery of) the creation of male and female;- 3 Certainly, your efforts and deeds are diverse (different in aims and purposes); 4 As for him who gave out his wealth (for Allah's sake) and abstained (from disobeying Him), 5 And believeth in goodness; 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 For him We shall ease the way of adversity, 10 And his riches will not avail him when he falls headlong (into the Abyss). 11 Indeed, Guidance is Ours, 12 And most surely Ours is the hereafter and the former. 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 Who gives the lie (to the truth) and turns (his) back. 16 and from which the most godfearing shall be removed, 17 And gives of his wealth that he may grow in virtue, 18 And have in his mind no favour from anyone for which a reward is expected in return, 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 He will surely be well-pleased (with him). 21
