We seized Pharaoh's people with years of drought and scarcity of fruit so that they might remember. 130 Yet when good came their way they said: "It is our due;" but when misfortune befell them they put the omen down to Moses and those who were with him. But surely the omen was with God, yet most of them did not understand. 131 They said (to Moses): "Whatever be the Signs thou bringest, to work therewith thy sorcery on us, we shall never believe in thee. 132 So We sent upon them the flood and locusts and lice and frogs and blood as distinct signs, but they were arrogant and were a criminal people. 133 And when the wrath fell upon them, they said, 'Moses, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee. If thou removest from us the wrath, surely we will believe thee, and send forth with thee the Children of Israel.' 134 But when We had lifted the plague from them for a term which they had to reach, they broke their promise. 135 So We took vengeance on them, and drowned them in the sea, for that they cried lies to Our signs and heeded them not. 136 And We caused the folk who were despised to inherit the eastern parts of the land and the western parts thereof which We had blessed. And the fair word of thy Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of their endurance; and We annihilated (all) that Pharaoh and his folk had done and that they had contrived. 137 And We led the Children of Isra'il across the sea. Then they came upon a people cleaving to the idols they had. They said: Musa! make for us a god even as they have gods. He said: verily ye are a people given to ignorance. 138 As for these here - verily, their way of life is bound to lead to destruction; and worthless is all that they have ever done!" 139 [And] he said: "Am I to seek for you a deity other than God, although it is He who has favoured you above all other people?" 140 We delivered you from Pharaoh's people, who afflicted you with dreadful torment, slaying your male children and sparing only your daughters. That was surely a great trial for you by your Lord." 141
