The tribe of Thamud rejected the Messengers. 141 When their brother Salih said to them, "Will you not fear God? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So fear Allah, and obey me. 144 For this I demand no recompense from you; my reward is only with the Lord of the Universe. 145 "Do you think that you will remain here peacefully forever 146 In gardens and watersprings. 147 And cornfields and palm-trees having fine spadices? 148 “And you carve out dwellings in the mountains, with skill?” 149 So fear you God, and obey you me; 150 And do not obey the order of the transgressors, 151 those who spread corruption in the land instead of putting things right." 152 They said: "Thou art only one of those bewitched! 153 "Thou art no more than a mortal like us: then bring us a Sign, if thou tellest the truth!" 154 He said: This is a she-camel; she shall have her portion of water, and you have your portion of water on an appointed time; 155 Do not treat her unkindly or the punishment of a grievous day will fall on you." 156 But they hamstrung her, and then were penitent. 157 For they were seized by the torment. Verily there was a sign in this, but most of them did not believe. 158 Your Lord is the Mighty One, the Merciful. 159
