Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
By the dawn, 1 And by ten nights, 2 And by oath of the even and the odd. 3 And by oath of the night when it recedes 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 ART THOU NOT aware of how thy Sustainer has dealt with [the tribe of] 'Ad, 6 of the columned (city) of Iram, 7 Like whom no one else was born in the cities. 8 And Thamood, who hewed out the rocks of the valley? 9 and with Pharaoh of the stakes? 10 Who (all) were rebellious (to Allah) in these lands, 11 And made therein much mischief. 12 Thus, your Lord afflicted them with torment; 13 Verily, your Lord is Ever Watchful (over them). 14 And as for man, when his Lord tries him, then treats him with honor and makes him lead an easy life, he says: My Lord honors me. 15 And if He tests him and restricts his livelihood – thereupon he says, “My Lord has degraded me!” 16 (Since wealth does not necessarily guarantee everlasting happiness) then why do you not show kindness to the orphans, 17 nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you devour (others') inheritance greedily, 19 And you love wealth with immense love. 20 Nay! When the earth is ground to powder, 21 and (when you find yourself) in the presence of your Lord and the rows and rows of angels, your greed for riches will certainly be of no avail to you. 22 And Hell will be brought near that Day. On that Day will man remember, but how will that remembrance (then) avail him? 23 He will say: would that I had sent before for this life of mine! 24 None punisheth as He will punish on that day! 25 And none will bind as He will bind. 26 Serene soul, 27 Return to your Lord, well-pleased (with him), well-pleasing (Him), 28 So enter among My servants, 29 And enter thou My Garden. 30
