The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
I swear by the night when it draws a veil, 1 and by the day when it unveils. 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 and believes in the finest, 6 for him shall We make easy the path towards [ultimate] ease. 7 But as for him who hoardeth and deemeth himself independent, 8 and calls the ultimate good a lie 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 And what will his wealth avail him when he falls? 11 Lo! Ours it is (to give) the guidance 12 And to Us belong the End and the Beginning. 13 Now I have warned you of a Fire that flames, 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 Who denied (the truth) and turned away. 16 But the God-fearing shall be kept away from it, 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 not as payment for any favours that he received, 19 Except the seeking of the pleasure of his Lord, the Most High. 20 And presently he shall become well pleased. 21
