The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
A beseecher besought the visitation of chastisement, 1 The Unbelievers, the which there is none to ward off,- 2 from punishing them. He is the Lord of the Ascending Stairways, 3 all the angels and all the inspiration [ever granted to man] ascend unto Him [daily,] in a day the length whereof is [like] fifty thousand years… 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They surely take it to be far away, 6 but, We see it as near! 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 No loyal friend will ask another loyal friend 10 Though they shall be made to see one another. Fain would the guilty ransom himself from the torment of that Day by his children. 11 his companion wife, his brother, 12 and of all the kinsfolk who ever sheltered him, 13 and all the people of the earth, if that could deliver him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And masseth and then hoardeth. 18 ۞ Verily man is formed impatient. 19 If evil befalls him he is perturbed; 20 and whenever good fortune comes to him, he grows niggardly. 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are regular in their prayers. 23 In whose wealth a due share is included 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the punishment of their Lord, -- 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their chastity (i.e. private parts from illegal sexual acts). 29 except from their wives and what their right hands own, for these they are not blameworthy. 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
