He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
۞ HE FROWNED AND turned away, 1 Because there came to him the blind man (i.e. 'Abdullah bin Umm-Maktum, who came to the Prophet (Peace be upon him) while he was preaching to one or some of the Quraish chiefs). 2 But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified 3 or receive some (Quranic) advice which would benefit him. 4 As for him who is not in want of any thing, 5 So you are after him! 6 Though it is no blame to thee if he grow not (in spiritual understanding). 7 And as for him who cometh unto thee running, 8 and fearfully, 9 to him thou payest no heed. 10 Indeed, this [Quran] is an admonition. 11 (and whoso wills, shall remember it) 12 On honourable pages. 13 Exalted, purified, 14 borne by the hands of scribes, 15 noble and purified. 16 Accursed is man. How ungrateful is he! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Of a sperm-drop He created him, and determined him, 19 and then made the course of life easy for him, 20 Then He causes his death and provides a grave for him. 21 and He will resurrect him whenever He wants. 22 Nay; but he has not done what He bade him. 23 Let Man consider his nourishment. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then We split the earth properly. 26 We make the grain grow out of it, 27 And grapes and herbage 28 Olives and dates, 29 and dense orchards, 30 and fruits and fodder 31 A provision for you and your cattle. 32 Then when cometh the Deafening Cry 33 on the Day when each man shall flee from his brother, 34 And from his mother and his father, 35 and from his spouse and his children: 36 Every man of them shall on that day have an affair which will occupy him. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 Laughing, rejoicing. 39 And other faces, on that day, with dust upon them, 40 Darkness shall cover them. 41 Those, they are the unbelievers, the immoral. 42
