The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL THE night to witness when it covers over, 1 and by the day as it appears radiantly, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 your striving is indeed to different ends! 4 Then as for him who gives away and guards (against evil), 5 And believed the best matter to be true 6 We will ease him toward ease. 7 And for him who hoarded wealth and remained carefree, 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 for him shall We make easy the path towards hardship: 10 his wealth shall not avail him when he perishes. 11 Surely it is for Us to show the Right Way, 12 And truly, unto Us (belong) the last (Hereafter) and the first (this world). 13 I have now warned you of the Blazing Fire, 14 None shall enter it but the most unhappy, 15 who belied and turned away, 16 And away from it shall be kept the one who guards most (against evil), 17 Those who spend their wealth for increase in self-purification, 18 and confers no favor upon anyone for recompense 19 only seeking the Face of his Lord the Most High; 20 and the reward (of their Lord) will certainly make them happy. 21
