The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
56 verses, revealed in Mecca after Unknown Person (Al-Muzzammil) before The Key (Al-Faatehah)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped in thy cloak, 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord do magnify, 3 And thine inner self purify! 4 stay away from sins 5 And bestow not favour that thou mayest receive more. 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 When the Trumpet shall be sounded, 8 that day will be a harsh day, 9 For the unbelievers, anything but easy. 10 Leave him to Me, the one whom I created single. 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And sons always present by his side, 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 And who yet coveteth that shall increase. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 We shall make him suffer the torment of hell without relief. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 So may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 19 Then may he be destroyed [for] how he deliberated. 20 He looked (at others); 21 Then he frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 This is nothing but the word of mortal man!" 25 I will drive him into Saqar. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It spares not, neither leaves alone 28 it scorches (even) the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen keepers. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
