Mary (Maryam)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
Kaf. Ha. Ya. 'Ain. Sad. 1 This is an account of the mercy of your Lord to His servant Zechariah 2 when he called upon his Lord in low tones, saying, 3 He said: O my Lord! verily the bones of me have waxen feeble, and the head is glistening with hoariness, and have not yet been in my prayer to thee, my Lord, unblest. 4 But I fear my relatives after me; and my wife is barren. So grant me a successor as a favour from You 5 “He being my successor and the heir of the Descendants of Yaqub (Jacob); and my Lord, make him a cherished* one.” (* Make him a Prophet among the Descendants of Israel.) 6 (He was told): "Zechariah, We bring you the good news of the birth of a son whose name shall be Yahya (John), one whose namesake We never created before." 7 He said: O my Lord! when shall I have a son, and my wife is barren, and I myself have reached indeed the extreme degree of old age? 8 He said, "It will be so! Your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me for I created you when you were nothing before.'" 9 He (Zachariah) said: 'Lord, make for me a sign' He replied: 'Your sign is that you shall not speak to people for three nights being without fault' 10 So he came forth unto his people from the Sanctuary, then he made signal to them, 'Give you glory at dawn and evening.' 11 O Yahya! take hold of the Book with strength, and We granted him wisdom while yet a child 12 And tenderness from Our presence and purity, and he was God-fearing. 13 and cherishing his parents, not arrogant, rebellious. 14 And Peace be unto him the day he was born and the day he dieth and the day he will be raised up alive. 15
