A throng of the ancients 39 and a good many of later times. 40 And those on the left – how (wretched) are those on the left! 41 They will live amid the scorching, 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 and before that they lived at ease, 45 And persisted obstinately in wickedness supreme! 46 And they used to say: "When we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be resurrected? 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 (Muhammad), say, "All the ancient and later generations 49 shall be gathered together to the appointed time on a known Day' 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 and shall drink boiling water on top of that. 54 Lapping it up like female camels raging of thirst with disease." 55 Such will be their welcome on the Day of Judgement. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have decreed among you Death; We shall not be outstripped; 60 that We will change you and cause you to grow again in a way you do not know. 61 You have surely known of the first creation. Why then, will you not remember! 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Do you yourselves sow it, or are We the Sowers? 64 [For,] were it Our will, We could indeed turn it into chaff, and you would be left to wonder [and to lament,] 65 Verily we are undone. 66 “In fact, we were unfortunate!” 67 Did you cast a good look at the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who brought it down from the clouds, or is it We who bring it down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 We made it a reminder and a provision for the needy. 73 Extol, then, the limitless glory of thy Sustainer's mighty name! 74
