The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 Upon the disbelievers – the punishment that none can avert. 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 Wherefore be thou patient with a becoming patience. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 But We see it (quite) near. 7 On the Day the sky will be like murky oil, 8 and the mountains will become like dyed tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And the family in which he was. 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 By no means! For the raging flames of the fire 15 Eager to roast; 16 It calleth him who turned and fled (from truth), 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Surely man was created fretful, 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 Those who are constant in their prayer 23 and those in whose wealth there is a known right 24 for the needy and the deprived, 25 who confirm the Day of Doom 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 (from their Lord's chastisement none feels secure) 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who respect their trusts and covenants; 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
