Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Ha-Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear, 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As a command from Our presence - Lo! We are ever sending - 5 in pursuance of thy Sustainer's grace [unto man]. Verily, He alone is all-hearing, all-knowing, 6 He is the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them, if only you would have strong faith. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Nay, they are in doubt, they sport. 9 Wait for the day (which will come before the Day of Judgment) when the sky will give out dense smoke 10 engulfing the people; this will be a painful punishment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How can there be remembrance for them, when a messenger making plain (the Truth) had already come unto them, 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ And before them We indeed tried the people of Firaun, and an Honourable Noble Messenger came to them. 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 "And exalt not (yourselves) against Allah. Truly, I have come to you with a manifest authority. 19 "For me, I have sought safety with my Lord and your Lord, against your injuring me. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Then he called upon his Lord: these are a people guilty. 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 and leave the sea becalmed [between thee and Pharaoh's men]: for, verily, they are a host destined to be drowned!" 24 How many were the gardens and springs they left behind, 25 And fields and grand palaces! 26 And wealth (and conveniences of life), wherein they had taken such delight! 27 Even so; and We bequeathed them upon another people. 28 And neither heaven nor earth shed a tear over them: nor were they given a respite (again). 29
