The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
۞ I do not (need to) swear by this town (Mecca) 1 And you are free to live upon it, -- 2 And [by] the father and that which was born [of him], 3 We verily have created man in an atmosphere: 4 Does man think that no one will ever have power over him? 5 He will say: 'I have destroyed a vast wealth' 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes? 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And shown him the two highways? 10 Yet, he has not entered into Aqaba 11 And what have you understood, what the valley is! 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 And to feed in the day of hunger. 14 To the orphan with claims of relationship, 15 Or the poor in distress; 16 and being, withal, of those who have attained to faith, and who enjoin upon one another patience in adversity, and enjoin upon one another compassion. 17 These are the fellows of the righthand. 18 But those who reject Our Signs, they are the (unhappy) Companions of the Left Hand. 19 Over them shall be Fire closing round. 20
