A multitude from the ancients. 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 BUT AS FOR those who have persevered in evil - what of those who have persevered in evil? 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 Indeed they were among favours before this. 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 And also our forefathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 will indeed be gathered together at an appointed time on a Day known [only to God]: 50 Then you people who had gone astray and rejected the Truth 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 Then will fill your bellies with it. 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 drinking it as thirsty camels do.” 55 That will be their entertainment on the Day of Recompense! 56 It is We who have created you. Why then did you not testify to the Truth? 57 Behold! that which ye emit. 58 Do you create it, or We are its creator? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 You have known the first growth; so why will you not remember? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you that cause it to grow, or are We the causers of growth? 64 If We will We can make it like dry trampled hay, so you would keep crying out. 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 nay, we are deprived [altogether]." 67 Have you considered the water that you drink? 68 Send it down ye from the raincloud, or are We the Sender down? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you seen the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it a reminder and provision for the travelers, 73 So glorify your Lord, the most supreme. 74
