And certainly did We send Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his establishment, and he said, "Indeed, I am the messenger of the Lord of the worlds." 46 But when he came to them with Our signs, lo! they laughed at them. 47 Of all the miracles which We showed to them the latter ones were greater than the former. We struck them with torment so that perhaps they would return to Us. 48 And they said, 'Sorcerer, pray to thy Lord for us by the covenant He has made with thee, and surely we shall be right-guided.' 49 But when We removed from them the chastisement, lo! they broke the pledge. 50 And Firon proclaimed amongst his people: O my people! is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these rivers flow beneath me; do you not then see? 51 Nay! I am better than this fellow, who is contemptible, and who can hardly speak distinctly: 52 “So why was he not bestowed with armlets of gold? Or angels should have come with him staying at his side!” 53 Thus did he make fools of his people, and they obeyed him: truly were they a people rebellious (against Allah). 54 So, when they had angered Us, We took vengeance on them, and We drowned them all together; 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
