۞ (And it is said unto the angels): Assemble those who did wrong, together with their wives and what they used to worship 22 instead of God, and lead them all onto the way to the blazing fire, 23 "But stop them, for they must be asked: 24 'Why do you not help one another? 25 No indeed; but today they resign themselves in submission 26 And some of them shall advance towards others, questioning each other. 27 They said, “It is you who used to come to us from our right, in order to sway.” 28 Others will respond, "It was you who did not want to have any faith. 29 we had no authority over you; no, you were an insolent people. 30 So our Lord's Word is realised against us; we are tasting it. 31 "So we led you astray because we were ourselves astray." 32 So this day they all are partners in the punishment. 33 Lo! thus deal We with the guilty. 34 Whenever it was said to them: “There is no true deity apart from Allah,” they waxed proud 35 and said, "Should we give up our idols for the sake of an insane poet". 36 Nay: he has come with the truth and verified the apostles. 37 You will indeed taste a painful punishment, 38 And you will not be recompensed except for what you used to do - 39 Except the chosen bondmen of Allah. 40 shall have a known provision -- 41 a variety of delicious fruits; and they shall be honoured 42 In the Gardens of delight (Paradise), 43 sitting face to face upon couches, 44 A cup will be passed round among them [with a drink] from unsullied springs, 45 White and delicious to the drinkers; 46 Neither dulling the senses nor intoxicating, 47 Theirs shall be wide-eyed maidens with bashful, restrained glances, 48 As if they were eggs carefully protected. 49 Then they will advance unto each other, mutually questioning. 50 A speaker of them saith: Lo! I had a comrade 51 who was wont to ask [me,] 'Why - art thou really one of those who believe it to be true 52 [that] after we have died and become mere dust and bones we shall, forsooth, be brought to judgment?"' 53 And he will reply: 'Are you looking down (into Hell)' 54 Then he looks, and sees him in the midst of Hell. 55 He says, 'By God, wellnigh thou didst destroy me; 56 And had it not been for the favor of my Lord, I would certainly have been among those brought up. 57 Are we not then to die 58 except for our first death, and are we not chastised? 59 Indeed, this is the great attainment. 60 for the like of this let the workers work.' 61 Is that better by way of hospitality or the Zaqqum tree, 62 Indeed, We have made it a torment for the wrongdoers. 63 For it is a tree that springs out of the bottom of Hellfire: 64 The shoots of its fruit-stalks are like the heads of Shayatin (devils); 65 The dwellers of hell will eat that fruit and fill-up their bellies. 66 then on top of it they have a brew of boiling water, 67 They can only return to hell. 68 They found their fathers erring, 69 So they hastily follow their footsteps! 70 And indeed most of the men of old went astray before them; 71 though We had sent warners among them. 72 See how terrible was the end of those who were warned. 73 except for the chosen servants of Allah? 74
