The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Most Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 Your companion hath not gone astray, nor hath he erred. 2 And he does not say anything by his own desire. 3 It is not but a revelation revealed, 4 He was taught by [an angel] who is mighty in power, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he [Jibrael (Gabriel)] approached and came closer, 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 So did (Allah) convey the inspiration to His Servant- (conveyed) what He (meant) to convey. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Will you dispute with him what he saw? 12 And certainly he saw him in another descent, 13 at the Lote Tree (Sidrat tree) of the ending 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 (His) sight never swerved, nor did it go wrong! 17 truly did he see some of the most profound of his Sustainer's symbols. 18 Have you considered El-Lat and El-'Uzza 19 as well as [in] Manat, the third and last [of this triad]? 20 What, have you males, and He females! 21 Then that is surely a very unjust distribution! 22 They are but names which ye have named, ye and your fathers, for which Allah hath revealed no warrant. They follow but a guess and that which (they) themselves desire. And now the guidance from their Lord hath come unto them. 23 Does man imagine that whatever he wishes for is right for him? 24 To Allah belongs the Eternal life and the first life. 25
