The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
AN INQUIRER ASKED for the affliction that is to come 1 for the unbelievers, which none may avert, 2 No one can defend him against God, the Lord of the exalted positions. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore, [O believers] behave with seemly patience. 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 but We see it to be very near. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 And his wife and his brother. 12 and his kinsfolk who had stood by him, 13 And all that are in the earth, so that it might save him. 14 But nay! for lo! it is the fire of hell 15 A remover of exteriors. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed wealth and covetously hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 Very nervous when touched by misfortune. 20 If good comes to him he holds back his hand, 21 save those that pray 22 Those who remain constant in their Salat (prayers); 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of the chastisement of their Lord-- 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who of their private parts are guards. 29 Save with their wives and those whom their right hands possess, for thus they are not blameworthy; 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, then it is those who are trespassers. 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who stand by their testimony 33 and who guard their prayers [from all worldly intent]. 34 They will be in gardens, honored. 35
