Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
I CALL TO witness the dawn 1 By the ten nights (i.e. the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah). 2 by the even, and the odd, 3 The night as it advances, 4 Is there in that an oath for a mindful man? 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 The like of which were not produced in (all) the land? 8 And (with) Thamud (people), who cut (hewed) out rocks in the valley (to make dwellings)? 9 and Pharaoh, he of the tent-pegs, 10 (All) these transgressed beyond bounds in the lands, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Your Lord is certainly in wait. 14 Now, as for man, when his Lord trieth him, giving him honour and gifts, then saith he, (puffed up), "My Lord hath honoured me." 15 But when He tries him by restraining his means, he says: "My Lord despises me." 16 But nay, nay, [O men, consider all that you do and fail to do:] you are not generous towards the orphan, 17 or urge one another to feed the destitute? 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 But no; when the earth is ground to powder, 21 when your Lord comes down with the angels, rank upon rank, 22 and when Hell is brought near that Day. On that Day will man understand, but of what avail will that understanding be? 23 He will say, “Alas – if only I had sent some good deeds ahead, during my lifetime!” 24 For, none can make suffer as He will make suffer [the sinners] on that Day, 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 return to your Lord well pleased with him and He will be pleased with you. 28 And enter among My [righteous] servants 29 And enter into My garden. 30
