Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the break of Day 1 and the ten nights, 2 by the even and the odd, 3 And the night when it departeth, 4 Indeed in that there is an oath for a man of sense. 5 Hast thou not seen how thy Lord did with Ad, 6 With many-columned Iram, 7 the like of which was never created in the countries? 8 And (with) Samood, who hewed out the rocks in the valley, 9 (Also consider the people of) the Pharaoh who victimized people by placing them on the stake, 10 [It was they] who transgressed all bounds of equity all over their lands, 11 spreading in them much corruption? 12 So your Lord poured a scourge of punishment over them. 13 Most surely your Lord is watching. 14 As for man, when his Lord tests him, through honour and blessings, he says, "My Lord has honoured me," 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 Nay! But you treat not the orphans with kindness and generosity (i.e. you neither treat them well, nor give them their exact right of inheritance)! 17 Nor urge upon each other the feeding of the poor, 18 and greedily devour the entire inheritance, 19 And ye love riches with exceeding love. 20 By no means! when the earth shall be ground with grinding, grinding, 21 And comes your Lord, and angels row on row, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: “Would that I had sent ahead what would be of avail for this life of mine!” 24 For, that Day, His Chastisement will be such as none (else) can inflict, 25 And none can bind as He will bind. 26 But ah! thou soul at peace! 27 Return unto thine Lord well pleased and well-pleasing. 28 Enter among My servants 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
