The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the declining star, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 It is naught save an inspiration that is inspired, 4 One of mighty powers hath taught it him. 5 Dhu Mirrah (free from any defect in body and mind), Fastawa [then he (Jibrael - Gabriel) rose and became stable]. [Tafsir At-Tabari]. 6 When he was on the uppermost horizon. 7 Then he drew near and hung above suspended, 8 until he was as close to him as the distance of two bows, or even less. 9 So Allah divinely revealed to His bondman, whatever He divinely revealed. 10 His heart did not falsify what he perceived. 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 He certainly saw him (Gabriel) during his other ascent 13 to the Lot-tree (in the seven heavens) 14 Nigh unto which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which did cover it! 16 The eye turned not aside nor yet was overbold. 17 He certainly saw of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 HAVE YOU, then, ever considered [what you are worshipping in] Al-Lat and Al-Uzza, 19 and the third one, Manat? -- 20 Why - for yourselves [you would choose only] male offspring, whereas to Him [you assign] female: 21 That is indeed an unfair division! 22 They are naught but names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allah has not sent for them any authority. They follow naught but conjecture and the low desires which (their) souls incline to; and certainly the guidance has come to them from their Lord. 23 Shall man have whatever he craves? 24 To Allah belong both the Next World and the present. 25
