We sent Moses with Our signs to the Pharaoh and his nobles. He said: "I have been sent by the Lord of all the worlds." 46 But as soon as he came before them with Our [miraculous] signs, lo! they derided them, 47 (Even though) each miracle that We showed them was greater than the other. So We seized them with chastisement so that they may turn back. 48 They said, "Sorcerer, call on your Lord for us, by virtue of His pledge to you: we shall certainly accept guidance," 49 But when We removed the Penalty from them, behold, they broke their word. 50 And Fir'aun (Pharaoh) proclaimed among his people, saying: "O my people! Is not mine the dominion of Egypt, and these rivers flowing underneath me. See you not then? 51 Am I (not) better than him who is contemptible, and cannot even express himself clearly? 52 Why then have bracelets of gold not been cast on him, or angels not come with him conjoined?' 53 Thus he [Fir'aun (Pharaoh)] befooled and misled his people, and they obeyed him. Verily, they were ever a people who were Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). 54 So when they made Us wrathful, We took revenge from them – We therefore drowned all of them. 55 And We made them (a people) of the Past and an Example to later ages. 56
